Martin Arnold

Alone. Life Wastes Andy Hardy

1997-1998 – 14′ – Black and White

« Arnold’s new film, along with Pièce touchée and Passage à l’acte, constitutes a sort of trilogy of recidivist obsession. In his quest to break the codes of the classic Hollywood film, the director now tackles film music. The procedure is similar to that of the two previous films: first, very short, anodyne scenes of family life in the original Hollywood version are dissected down to the isolated image. Then a repetition and a new pacing of these « unicells », in a kind of « cloning », create a monstrous double, sometimes stretched over several minutes, of the original extract. The hidden messages of sex and violence of the original version then manifest themselves in a vivid way. »
