“In The Epic, the camera circles around two boxers as if they were a group of sculptures, thereby defining the space in which their bodies collide. At the beginning of the video, the boxers each look toward the camera, facing it head-on, thus drawing attention to the solitude of the ring. In the shots that follow, the camera moves and gradually rotates 360 degrees around the moving boxers.

They first size each other up with their eyes, then twirl around their opponent and partner, before finally coming to blows. The camera follows the fight in slow motion—eight times slower than normal—filming at 200 frames per second. The result highlights the forces acting on the bodies, shaping them and revealing their anatomy. The interaction between the two bodies resembles a dance and evokes archaic sculptures, whose flesh glistens with sweat.

The film’s third act focuses on the moment when the fighters find themselves locked in an embrace, in what is known as a “clinch.” This embrace is a moment of ambiguity: a back-and-forth between exhaustion and feinting, between drawing closer and giving up. It is also a moment of immense sensuality. The richness of the imagery is enhanced by the film’s soundtrack. It consists of the sounds of blows, footsteps, breathing, and heartbeats recorded during the actual fight, creating an acoustic space that uses sound waves to convey the physicality of the fight to the viewers’ bodies.”
