The existence of another self is first mentioned in 1730. Since then this expression is used in the common language to appoint someone that we truly trust and that we charge to act for us.
By adopting multiple personalities, artists are fabricating for us some alter ego. They become Shamans, priests, priestess, tarot and palm of the hand readers, they change their sexe, identity or ornament, redefine genders and take on another skin.
In doing so, artists are trying to connect in different ways to their inner self, to the other or to the planet. By releasing those culturally prefabricated identities, artists are questioning socials etiquettes
